FS2004 CSL3, Lac-a-la-Tortue, Quebec, Canada. Lac-a-la-Tortue, Lake of the Turtle, loosely translated, is 20 miles north of Trois Rivieres and the St Lawrence in Quebec. It has two runways 03/21 and 16/34 which are 3,000 and 2,000 feet long respectively, and the apron and buildings of Bel Air Laurentian Aviation are at the south end of 16/34. The result is that you approach 34 between the buildings, which is a surprise the first time. The company are a major force in Quebec, and for all of eastern Canada, for the mainteance of both wheeled and float aircraft, and you are as likely to see a Beaver on floats there as a Cessna on wheels. The pic is of a friend's rather distinctive Beaver, with a 600HP Polish radial engine, which has its annual inspection there every winter while waiting for the spring melt, and he flys from Ottawa every year for the service they provide. |

FS2004 CYPO, Peawanuck & CYWN, Winisk, Northern Ontario, Canada. Winisk is at the mouth of the Winisk River where it reaches Hudson Bay, around 110 miles west of the corner of James Bay and Hudson Bay. The village of Winisk was flooded in 1986, and it and everybody were moved inland 30 miles to Peawanuck, which stands on a hill in a bend of the Winisk River, 170 feet above sea level. In fact there are now, once again, some houses in the Winisk area, and for sure someone is using the airfield, although it is supposedly abandoned. I have no idea who. The runway is gravel and some 1,800 feet long. The area where the Winisk River flows into Hudson Bay is part of the Provincial Polar Bear Park, which is the least visited Provincial Park of them all. A real "get-away-from-it-all place to go from $2,950", as one company advertises it. Peawanuck has 3,500 feet of gravel runway, which should be enough. There is no fuel available officially, but a 50 gallon drum can be purchased for an eye-popping sum. You get charged the same whether you use 50 gallons or 5, and that high price is the reason for the fence. |

FS2004 CYMU, Umiujaq Airfield, Quebec, Canada. Umiujaq is on the coast of Hudson Bay, around 180 miles northeast of the corner of James Bay and Hudson Bay. The village was also, like Peawanuck, established in 1986, by Inuit who decided to move north from the area afffected by the Quebec hydro power generation developments. There is 3,500 feet of gravel runway, and while there is offically no fuel available a 50 gallon drum can be purchased in return for your life savings. You get charged the same whether you use 50 gallons or 5, and that high price is the reason for the fence. There is a small terminal building on this airfield as well as a hanger. |

FS2004 CYXI, Killaloe, Ontario, Canada. Killaloe is an old military airfield built for jet fighters in the 1950's,and now officially abandoned. It is 12 miles north of Madawaska Valley Airpark and just to the west of Round Lake, and there is no trouble spotting it as even from 20,000 feet it is very visible. This is mainly because it has a single 6,600 feet runway 29/11, which is likely to be useful if it all goes quiet and you need to land! So it is worth knowing about, even though the asphalt is not in a very good condition. It also continues to be used by the odd passing pilot who cannot resist adding another destination to his log book, though I have no personal knowledge of that. I understand local residents also use it for occasional drag racing, presumably unofficially. There must have been a lot more taxiaways and buildings when it was in use, but what is here is what is now left of all that. |

FS2004 CNZ4, Madawaska Valley Airpark, Ontario, Canada. Madawaska Valley Airpark is some 85 miles west of Ottawa, close to the town of Barrys Bay at the northern end of Kamaniskeg Lake. It has two grass runways which, although the field is not accurately situated in FS, are still definitely best used for landings from the west and for take-offs towards the west. The pictures from FS tell the story, and in the background you can see Barrys Bay and Lake Kamaniskeg. Note that these pics are with Ultimate Terrain installed, and if you don't have it compare these with your default and make your own mind up which is best. |

FS2004 CYMO, Moosonee, Ontario, Canada. Moosonee is in northern Ontario, close to the Quebec border at the south west corner of James Bay. It has two runways, 06/24 and 14/32, the first of which is a generous 4,000 feet long and the second 3,500 feet but 1,600 asphalt and 1,900 gravel. It is difficult to miss seeing the airfield as all you have to do is fly north along the Moose River until you see James Bay straight ahead, in which case the field will be to your left and front. It is now THE northern refuelling stop before heading off into the bush as other fields, Waskaganish, Eastmain, Fort Albany, Kashechewan, Attawapiskat, Wemindji, and Peawanuck, no longer sell fuel; in fact after Moosonee there is really only La Grande Riviere and further north the tongue-twisting Kuujjuarapik that can supply you. Plus the further north you go the more expensive the fuel. |
