FS2002 Pennsylvania Central Boeing 247D. The Boeing 247 was launched in 1933 as the first "modern" American airliner. Featureing all-metal monococque construction, the first 60 247s were originally earmarked for United Airlines. This forced competitors to look elsewhere for comparable equipment and TWA's quest for a plane like the 247 launched Douglas into the civilian market with the DC-2. The DC-2 and later the DC-3 outclassed the 247 in all regards, and Boeing's lead in commercial aircraft quickly evaporated. After the mainline carriers began equipping with DC-2s and DC-3s, the 247 moved on to second-tier carriers such a Pennsylvania Central. PCA operated the 247 form 1936 through the Second World War along its Mid-Atlantic and "Rust Belt" route system centered on Pittsburgh. In 1941, PCA moved its operation to Washington D.C.'s new National Airport, where it remained for the rest of the carrier's life. This move also brought with it a new focus and PCA's slogan, "The Capital Line" soon became its operating name - Capital Airlines. Capital stuggled through the 1950's, even though it was the fifth-largest in the nation. A heavey financial gamble in the mid-1950's gave Capital a fleet of turboprop Viscounts. While the jet-prop won loyalty, it was not enough to save the airline, which defaulted on its loans. Vickers-Armstrong threatened to repossess the Viscount fleet unless something was done. Capital, unable to survive on it's own, was absorbed into United Airlines in 1961.
