The first prototype XF4D-1 flew on January 23, 1951. On October 3, 1953 the second prototype set a world speed record of 1211kph. Entered production in June 1954 as F4D-1, by 1958 419 aircraft were built for U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Remained in service until 1965.
