Chance-Vought F7U "Cutlass" carrier-borne fighter 1948
This unusual tailless fighter became the first plane in U.S. Navy that reached speed of sound and the first being launched from catapult with external payload of 2268kg. The first prototype XF7U-1 flew on September 29, 1948. Entered production in March 1950. About 300 were built by 1955.
