Successor to the TBF Avenger. The first prototype flew on December 18, 1946. Entered production in 1949. AF's operated in pairs, one (AF-2W, 153 built) searching submarines with its radar, the other (AF-2S and -3S, 193+40 built) carrying armament. Replaced by S-2 "Tracker" in 1955.
