Based on IL-86.

Derived from the Il-86 medium range widebody jet, the Il-96-300 long range airliner features new wings with wingtip winglets, a fuselage shortened by 4 meters (12 ft.) compared to the Il-86 and fly-by-wire controls. The Il-96300 entered service with Aeroflot in 1993.

Il-96 variants include the Il-96M long range airliner and Il-96T freighter, which are stretched and  equipped with western engines and avionics. The most obvious change is the fuselage stretch,  which increases passenger accommodation back to over 350 (as on the Il-86). The most important change is the addition of Pratt & Whitney PW2337 turbofans, increasing fuel economy and reliability. Il-96M first flight occurred on April 6, 1993.
